2025 Convening on Architectural Education and Competencies for Licensure

, in collaboration with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ÌÇÐÄvlog), and , invites you to what we hope will be an ongoing series of conversations about architectural education and the preparation of students for architectural licensure.
Join NCARB, ÌÇÐÄvlog, and CCCAP for two virtual gatherings on May 29-30, 2025, where we will discuss the continuum of architectural education and the preparation of students for licensure, focusing on existing successes and future opportunities.
Building on the success of the 2023 ÌÇÐÄvlog Convening to Advance Community College Transfer and Articulation in Architectural Education in Philadelphia, PA, we hope to continue conversations on strengthening articulation between community colleges and professional and pre-professional architecture programs.

Session 1.1 Welcome, Transfer and Articulation
After welcome comments from NCARB and CCCAP, and a review of the 2023 Convening, hear examples and success stories from Community College and University partnerships and learn more about how to enhance your own transfer and articulation partnerships. Participants will be invited to share their own successes and challenges.

Session 1.2 Changes to IPAL
Laura Tiglao, Manager of Education Services at NCARB, will share recent updates to Integrated Path to Architectural Licensure (IPAL) program requirements, explaining how this creates new opportunities for partnerships between colleges and universities.

Session 1.3 Portfiolios
Three panelists will present transfer practices at the Associate, Bachelor and Master’s degree levels and invite participants to share their respective experiences. Panelists will share portfolio requirements, admission standards between degree levels, and provide some examples of portfolios sharing various levels of student success.

Day 2 Welcome from NCARB and ÌÇÐÄvlog, followed by a data-rich presentation on ÌÇÐÄvlog’s research and perspective on education and teaching.

Session 2.2 NCARB Competencies
The NCARB Education Committee will share its perspective on the NCARB Competency Standard for Architects as it relates to education. The Committee has spent the last year investigating which of the newly identified competencies could be fully acquired in an educational setting. Attendees will be invited to critique this work, sharing your perspective on what’s possible—and what’s already happening.

Session 2.3 Making it Real
Hear from an expert in competency-based education outside of Architecture to learn more about how competencies can be integrated into credit-based educational settings.
Experienced leaders of change and innovation within Architectural programs will share their perspectives on implementing new approaches, and the panelists will engage with the attendees for discussion and questions.
